In 1885 Lord Grantley of Wonersh, who owned a large part of the castle, sold the castle to the Guildford Corporation. The tower and other walls were restored, and the grounds were opened to the public in 1888 as pleasure gardens. In 2003-4, the great tower was conserved, during which the original crenellations and other features were discovered. A roof and floor were re-instated at first floor level, and the ground floor now houses a display on the castle.

In 1890s, the Poyle Charity sold the Town Mills and they were bought by Guildford Corporation. The Corporation had already acquiired the water undertaking at the mills in 1866, which is commemorated by a plaque on the wall of the 1852 extension. The latter has misled many people into thinking that much or all of the building is of that vintage although it is in fact much older. In 1966, the Water Board leased the mill to the newly opened Yvonne Arnaud Theatre as scenery workshops and the ownership returned to Guildford Corporation in 1971. :The mill is now a small studio theatre, but it remains one of the town's most impressive industrial monuments. A new turbine has now been installed and it opened to the public in September 2006. The turbine will generage 260,000-kilowatt hours per year, enough energy to power 50 typical households. The ivestment pay back period is approximately 10 years. As of 19 January 2007, the turbine had generated 40,820-kilowatt hours, which is 15.7% of the yearly target. Guildford Borough Council is the first local authority to own a small scale Hydro in the South East of England.

This picture looks down Quarry Street to St Mary's Church. The scene has changed very little since it was painted - all the buildings depicted remain virtually unaltered. St Mary's Church in the distanc eis the oldest surviving building in Guildford and is almost certainly the original church of the town. The present stone tower, the oldest part of the building, was constructed between 950 and 1100. Notice the beautifully-detailed boot scraper close to the porticoed entrance in the right hand corner of the painting. The fashions are also typical of the time. The lady in the foreground is wearing a typical 1890s outfit with large puff sleeves and a parasol with a hat and bell skirt - this would be a typical walking outfit. The young child is in a sailors suit and the gentleman in the background on the right is dressed very formally indeed with a top hat.
