Winifred Scholfield taught art at the South Wilts Grammar School for Girls in Salisbury for many years. She was certainly there in 1939. (active 1920s-1980s) She died in April 2000. We have very little biographical information on this artist and would like to hear from anyone who has more detail of her life and work.

There were many mills on this site from 1693 producing paper, then iron and finally vegetable oil from crushed seed. However, this flammable product led to fire destroying the mills in 1877 and finally in 1963. It greatly impressed me as an imposing standing rather neglected (at that time) all alone in the fields. I later sketched it’. On frame, ‘Byfleet Manor, Surrey. Inscribed on mount, ‘Sketched in 1931. Probably long out of use by then. The Old Stable yard of ‘The Bull’ (Sheen Lane, East Sheen)’. Inscribed, verso, ‘I think this yard was very likely used for the horses drawing the coaches ‘Vivid’ and ‘Venture’ which ran along the Upper Richmond Road during my childhood. I remember seeing the ‘Vivid’ pass the East Sheen Council School when I was about 9 years old - in 1917 (!)’.
